Well, what did you EXPECT?

Life is largely a matter of expectation.

Homer

I’ve written quite a bit about expectation over the years. In fact, I was just working on a teaching today that hits on the issue of expectation and disappointment.

It’s a recurrent theme in our world. We all have at least one area in our lives about which we can say,

“This was not the outcome I expected. This was not the outcome I wanted. This was not the outcome I prayed for.”

But here’s the thing—and I’m gonna be blunt because I’m not up for being poetic:

We live in bodies that are broken in a world that is broken.

And expecting things to be better than they are is natural because IT WASN’T MEANT TO BE THIS WAY.

We weren’t meant to be broken.

Our bodies weren’t meant to be broken.

Our world wasn’t meant to be broken.

And our spirits remember.

And they long for what they were MADE FOR—

Unconditional love.

Health and vigor.

Mission and purpose.

Mercy and justice.

REAL relationship.

Deep communion.

Beauty and truth.

Anything less will always disappoint.

Because, my friends, we were made for better.

We were made for paradise.

And our spirits

long for home.
