    Professional Clinical Counseling

Lorie has been approved by the State of Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervisory Status and has over 25 years of experience working with adults, adolescents, and children. She is a warm and caring professional with a passion for empowering others to thrive even in the midst of pain.

Lorie received her Master of Arts degree in Counseling and her Master of Family and Consumer Sciences degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Bowling Green State University in 1998. She is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors.

Lorie is additionally a Certified Spiritual Director and a Certified Enneagram Coach, as well as finishing up her training to become a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and a Certified Clinical Telemental Health Provider.

As a Christian clinician, Lorie strives to be sensitive to and respect the spiritual dimension of each person without transposing her own beliefs over those of her clients. When clients are meeting with Lorie expressly because she is a Christian and they desire to receive counseling that incorporates their biblical worldview, Lorie brings 25 years of experience as a Christian counselor and 8 years as a pastor to the table.

Because licensure is determined at the state level, Lorie is unfortunately only licensed to see clinical counseling clients who reside within the state of Ohio. She currently sees about ten clients a week.

Specializations

  • modalities

Lorie has training in the following modalities:

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Motivational Interviewing, Brief Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Strengths Based Therapy, and Trauma Informed Care

  • chronic pain and illness

Because Lorie has experience with chronic pain and illness both as a patient and as a parent, she is particularly drawn to working with people who have had their lives turned upside down by their own bodies. She is passionate about helping people “suffer well” and learn how to embrace where they are NOW while still looking forward with expectancy.

  • spirituality

Lorie is a professing Christian but has worked with people of all faith backgrounds. She is particularly interested in the place where psychology, neurobiology, and spirituality combine—known as “neurotheology”—believing that this is the “sweet spot” for lasting transformation.

  • women's issues

While Lorie does not work exclusively with women, they typically make up at least 65% of her practice. Entering the “empty nest” stage, herself, Lorie is able to work with women at all stages of their lives on issues that uniquely affect women, such as infertility, pregnancy loss, parenting, being a working mom, divorce, hormonal changes, and identity issues.

  • depression and anxiety

Lorie has had a great deal of experience and success working with individuals experiencing depression and anxiety, in part because she has experienced both, personally, throughout her life. Because she knows just how debilitating both conditions really can be, she is uniquely able to meet and work with people where they’re at and gently move them forward.

  • trauma and grief

Lorie has worked with a variety of types of trauma and loss, but is particularly drawn to medical trauma because of her own experiences and the stories of others with chronic pain and illness. She also loves working with unconventional types of loss, such as the loss of one’s career, identity, independence, or sense of purpose due to chronic illness or other unexpected situations.

One must have suffered oneself to help others.
